Getting to Know Anne Howarth

As promised, here is the interview Sarah Friswell did with one of this week's guest artists, Anne Howarth!  I am always so excited to get these interviews in and see what two people from two different parts of our lives have to say!

SF:  Before we truly begin, could you tell us a little about yourself?
AH:  I’m a classically trained horn player who teaches and performs throughout the Boston area, and I am ridiculously lucky to be able to work with such talented, creative, supportive artists as those of Monkeyhouse. I play orchestra music, chamber music, and a bit of solo music. I’ve dabbled in jazz, though only the chart reading part. I teach horn and chamber music at Tufts, U Mass Boston, the Brookline Music School, in the Milton public schools, and at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. I’m a budding vegetable gardener, I love to travel, I love good, flavorful food, and I’m fascinated by people.
SF:  What is your history with Monkeyhouse?
AH:  My husband and I went to a Valentine’s Day concert at CMAC somewhere towards the beginning of our courtship, and we stopped to talk with Jason and Karen after the show (thanks to free ice cream provided by J.P. Licks). We got to know Karen and Jason over several years of dance shows and social events. We have been devoted fans ever since, and in the past year or two my role has expanded to include participation in some spork-type events and occasional performances with the group. Most recently, I played for a couple of pieces at First Night 2011.

SF:  Could you tell us a little more about your experience performing with Monkeyhouse at Art Beat and First Night?
AH:  Art Beat was my first experience performing with the group, and it was wonderful and strange compared with my musical performing experience. It was informative (it turns out that dancers walk the floor of a space to get a feel for it in the same way that I play to test the acoustics before beginning a performance), and it was joyous in a physical way (classical musicians may feel joyous, but we tend only to express it through our playing, to at most our eyebrows). I am used to thinking of performance clothes (black, anyone?) and not costumes (which are a whole lot more fun but a whole lot more work to keep track of).  Our First Night performances included my improvisation debut and a solo horn performance in front the largest audience for which I have ever played solo. The energy of the group was high but focused and the performances were all generous and fulfilling.

SF:  What is your favorite type of music to play and perform?
AH:  Chamber music, without a doubt. Also happy music. And music that tells a story.

SF:  Have you always played music for dance?
AH:  I have played operas, big bands, and a little Javanese Gamelan, but I had never worked with dancers before Monkeyhouse. You didn’t ask if I have any dance experience! I took a modern dance class my last semester of  college and fell in love with it. I promised myself I would continue taking classes, but I went to grad school in music and never got back to dance.  It has been great fun to explore movement again – I’m looking forward to the Improv Partnering Workshop that is part of Against the Odds on Saturday!

SF:  How has your music changed since you began working with dancers?
AH:  As musicians, we talk a lot about the motion and direction of phrases, the push and pull, the balance. After working with dancers, and especially after participating in the movement on stage, I feel these concepts in a different, more visceral way.  You can actually hear it in my playing. I’ve just taken an audition for the Boston Symphony, and the first required piece was a Courante from one of Bach’s solo cello suites (transcribed for horn). I built a dance for the piece, which not only brought more depth of expression to my playing, but imagining the dance in my head while I was on-stage auditioning brought me focus and helped me stay calm under intense pressure. It was the first time I’ve felt truly relaxed and free in an audition.
SF:  Is the french horn the only instrument you play/have played?  If not, what else have you played?
AH:  I played piano when I was young, but playing the horn in a pretty full time occupation!

SF:  What are you plans after Against the Odds?
AH:  My woodwind quintet, Vento Chiaro, is working with the Boston Composer’s Coalition on a concert of entirely new works written just for our group. We’ll perform them April 16 & 17. My students in Milton are giving a recital for their families on April 26th. I am the outreach director for my mixed instrument chamber group, Radius Ensemble, and we are performing a family concert at the Cambridge Public Library on April 30th. Karen and I have more work to do with our horn/dance chamber ensemble – stay tuned for more information! Also, my vegetable garden really needs to be turned over so I can plant my early season crops!

Against the Odds - Popping Up on 3/18

Greetings!

Recently, Monkeyhouse has been inspired by pop up stores and gourmet food trucks (Did you know that you can get escargot pops at  Spencer On The Go's French food truck in San Francisco? Yum!). So, on March 18th we are launching a pop up, mashup of dance, visual art, and conversation entitled, Against the Odds: Stories of Adaptation, Translation and Survival. That's right, you and all of your friends, family, and lovers are invited to this four week long celebration at our artistic home, Springstep (98 George P Hassett Drive) in Medford, MA .

Against the Odds is a moving smorgasbord with a rotating array of opening acts, master classes, and guest artists alongside a smattering of Monkeyhouse pieces (including premieres choreographed by Eva Dean and Lynn Schwab). Each week holds a different adventure for audience members through Friday Nights Out and  Sassy Saturday Classes.

No two performances will feature the same Monkeyhouse pieces or dancers so feel free to attend as many weeks as you like. Oh, and during the course of the festival, we will change venues within the building (The first two weeks are in the Medium studio and the last two weeks are held in Hawkins Hall.) giving repeat audience members a chance to see how the rooms shape our perspective on individual pieces. And did we mention that  Hannah Verlin, who just received a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship for sculpture, is creating an installation for us? Get your tickets now as seating is limited and be sure to follow us on twitter or the blog to gather up more insider details.

* When Monkeyhouse returns to ArtBeat in Somerville, MA, Nicole Harris premieres Fidelius and Caitlin Meehan, who began dancing with Monkeyhouse in 2007, premieres a solo, entitled A.,B.,C.,D. All of the Above.

August

* Monkeyhouse premieres Odds, a quartet set to music by Rudy Trubitt and Aaron Ximm, at the Massachusetts Dance Festival in Amherst, MA.

* Karen Krolak leads several exciting and rewarding modern dance workshops for students during both weekends of the Massachusetts Dance Festival.

* Connect 2 Choreography develops a series of posts about the efforts to save the Inside/Out stage at Jacob's Pillow. The blog is recognized for being an important digital ambassador.

September

* Nicole Harris organizes Your Just Desserts to celebrate Monkeyhouse’s 10th Anniversary. This community-building event attracts a slew of new corporate sponsors, engages new and established supporters, and features a fabulous bake-off.

October

* Monkeyhouse premieres Æ, a site-specific piece at Wright’s Tower for Dance in the Fells, a new festival that has been nominated for a Gold Star from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Æ features music composed by Ralph Farris and David Pavkovic.

* Nicole Harris is selected to develop a new group piece as part of the Emerging Artist Program at Green Street Studios in Cambridge, MA.

* Karen Krolak and Monkeyhouse’s dancers lead a partnering workshop at Endicott College as part of the Cambridge Connections: Urban Dance at Endicott College Project. After that, Monkeyhouse holds an open Musing for choreography students to watch.

November

* Nikki Sao Pedro became the first person other than Karen Krolak to perform Ululation/Mourning After ( aka the Nail Shirt piece), when Monkeyhouse is presented at Cambridge Connections: Urban Dance at Endicott College. Caitlin Meehan, Nicole Harris, Karen Krolak, and kwaq7aj’, Monkeyhouse’s first canine choreographer, create a new version of Firk (Firk 1.2) for this concert as well.

* Monkeyhouse is invited to build new work for Movement at the Mills at the Boston Center for the Arts. We perform a new improvisation and an adapted version of Anti-ossification, which now includes real-time video and adds dancer Courtney Wagner to the piece to make it a trio.

December

* Monkeyhouse prepares with new and newly adapted pieces for a 5th return engagement (over 10 years) to Boston's First Night. As part of the celebratory concert, Karen Krolak sets a new piece on Eva Dean, Artistic Director of Eva Dean Dance in Brooklyn, NY and French Horn player, Anne Howarth collaborates on another premiere.

* Monkeyhouse accepted again to the Cool New York Dance Festival in Brooklyn in January. Fidelius and Ululation/Mourning After will be performed.

Thanks again to everyone who made this year so fun and successful. Remember "Without You, we would just be Monkeyhose!" Happy New Year!

Monkeyhouse @ First Night Fun Fact of the Day

by Nicole Harris

Monkeyhouse @ First Night 2011 Fun Fact of the Day:

To those of you who have never been to a Monkeyhouse rehearsal it might come as a surprise to know that we sometimes lose focus.  (To anyone who has ever spent any time with any one of us this comes as no surprise at all...)

This stool, which made its debut at Art Beat and is just one of many chairs gracing the Monkeyhouse stage in the next few months, provides hours of upended entertainment during quiet moments of rehearsal.

At the start of rehearsal today Karen was standing in for Courtney.  In an obvious next step, Karen's socks were standing in for Karen.  They were working very hard.  Hard enough that a camera was brought out to document the occasion.

Anne and her french horn did their best to keep us in check, both when we got a little off track and during the new Firk we were rehearsing.  I am so glad she (and her horn) are making it a habit of appearing in Monkeyhouse shows these days!

Monkeyhouse @ First Night 2011 Fun Fact of the Day

Monkeyhouse @ First Night 2011 Fun Fact of the Day:

Anne Howarth is a wonderful example of why we love chatting with audience members after our shows. Our Production Manager, Jason Ries, first met her at a reception after Monkeyhouse's production, Ahem, Aha! Hmmm... in 2004 at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center. Anne has guided us to local classical music hot spots and has been an incredible Mover & Shaker. This year, for example, she helped us move the office, checked people in at Your Just Desserts, and offered advice at Sporks. Everyone needs a French Horn player like this in their life.

Monkeyhouse @ First Night Fun Fact of the Day

Monkeyhouse @ First Night 2011 Fun Fact of the Day:

Hoot, hoot! Anne Howarth will add a French Horn twist to the newest incarnation of Firk, Firk 1.4, for our performances at First Night. While Anne regularly plays with Radius Ensemble and Vento Chiaro, we have lured her into a more improvisational piece. Oh, and she will also bring back The Dream of the Rhinoceros for those of you who missed it at ArtBeat.

Monkeyhouse @ First Night for the 5th time!

by karen Krolak

Mercy me, this weekend is going to be jam packed with creative endeavours. Tomorrow, Monkeyhouse will be at Springstep re-setting Ramfeezled, one of our funniest and best loved pieces, for our fifth appearance at First Night Boston. Then Jason, kwaq7aj', and I will skedaddle down to New York to wish Ralph Farris (genius viola player and the composer for one section of our performance for Dance in the Fells) a fabulous 40th birthday. Sunday afternoon, I will scoot over to Union Street Dance in Brooklyn to start a piece featuring Eva Dean...also for First Night. Then Jason and I will get a sneak preview of Three Pianos, an OBIE winning music-theater event written, arranged and performed by Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy, and Dave Malloy. According to our invite, we should be prepared for "compositional mayhem, shifting rivalries, and some unfortunate butchery of the German language."

Oh yes, so here are the details about Monkeyhouse's First Night performances. Please note that we will be in the Hynes Convention Center this year. To celebrate their 10th Anniversary season, Monkeyhouse is mixing and mashing the old with the new and tossing in a guest artist or two. Humor flows through their slightly surreal dance theater world as they tackle topics from flirting, rhinoceros fantasies, and re-gaining the rhythm of a relationship. Be on the lookout for Anne Howarth on French Horn and New York City's Eva Dean in a sassy smorgasbord of pieces by Karen Krolak, Nicole Harris, and Amelia O'Dowd.

First night button $18, children under 4 are free

Psst...and I just heard now that Twink has given us permission to use one of their songs for one of our premieres! Thank you Twink.
